A Gentleman In Moscow: A Short Synopsis
This is the story of Count Alexander Rostov, a “Former Person” – someone born into an aristocratic family at the time of the Russian Revolution. The book opens as Count Rostov is sentenced to house arrest within the walls of the luxurious Metropol Hotel in Moscow for the remainder of his life.
He begins his prison sentence, gazing ahead to a life of endless hours…endless days…endless weeks. More than three decades later, he looks back on a life filled with an abundance of people, experiences, and one singular but very wonderful purpose.
Count Rostov watches the tumultuous events of 20th-century Russia unfold through his attic window and through the eyes of the visitors who frequent the restaurants and rooms of the Metropol. Through friendships and observation, he finds ways to bring his beloved country inside his confining walls.

My Recommendation: “Beautiful” Doesn’t Mean “Boring”
A Gentleman in Moscow is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. Amor Towles paints with words. It is a story driven by its characters, who are developed one exquisite phrase at a time.
I’ll be honest — it took me longer to read this book than many others. Many of the story’s details were almost hidden in the well-crafted prose. Some readers feel the first part of the book moves a bit slowly, but I encourage you to hang in there. The intrigue deepens, the threads tighten, and by the second half you begin to see exactly what Towles was doing all along.
Interestingly, Amor Towles addresses this himself:
“Bit characters, passing remarks, and incidental objects come swirling together and play essential roles in bringing the narrative to its sharply pointed conclusion. When effective, a book like this can provide a lot of unexpected satisfaction to the reader. The problem is that the plethora of elements in the first half can bog readers down, making them so frustrated or bored that they abandon the book. So, my challenge was to craft the story, the point of view, and the language in such a way that readers enjoy the first half and feel compelled to continue despite their uncertainty of where things are headed. Whether or not I succeeded in doing so is up to you.”

Make it a Movie Night
Trust me: watching Casablanca before you reach the halfway point of the book will make you smile later. That’s all I’ll say about that (mixed movie-quote apologies!).
Bring a Pencil
This book is full of quotable lines — wise, witty, beautifully crafted. Whether you write in your books or record your thoughts in a journal, there will be plenty you’ll want to remember.
CONSIDER THE AUDIOBOOK
If you want to experience this book in a totally different way, listen to the audiobook. Nicholas Guy Smith’s narration is wonderful. Just maybe don’t listen right as you’re falling asleep, unless you’d like Count Rostov whispering in your dreams.
