Summer Reading Vibes: How to Make the Most of Your Bookish Season

Share the book love!

Make summer reading even better! From solo reads to literary outings with friends, there’s something for every book lover! How will you take your fun off the page this summer?

Summer reading is already amazing (obviously), but why not make it even better? From solo reading in your favorite chair to literary field trips with your bookish besties, there is something here for everyone.

If you haven’t seen the other two posts in this series, you can explore a little about the origins of summer reading, and discover enough book recommendations to create a hazardous to-be-read stack. But in this post, let’s find ways to take the fun off the page and into real life!

Boost Your Solo Summer Reading

Nothing beats a few stolen moments alone with a book — unless it’s finding ways to make those moments last. Any of these ideas can be enjoyed solo or with friends, so it’s a perfect starting place for both the introverted and the extroverted reader.

  • Create Your Own Outdoor Reading Nook: Why stay indoors when you can create a cozy outdoor space? Transform part of your backyard or balcony into an inviting reading space. Grab some comfy cushions, string up fairy lights (because they make everything magical), add a small table for your sips and nibbles, and maybe even a hammock!
  • Seasonal Snacks & Drinks Inspired By Your Favorite Books: Whip up treats inspired by scenes from books you’re reading. Check out these literary yummies from Southern Living or this collection of mocktail and cocktail books.
  • Travel Ideas for Literary-Themed Day Trips or Vacations: Plan day trips or vacations around famous literary locations. Keep it local or venture further afield — a walk in Hemingway’s footsteps in Key West, anyone?
  • Keep a Reading Journal: This could be as simple as handwritten notes or spreadsheet on your computer, or you can get really serious with one of the many bound books available (search “reading journal” here for lots of options).
  • Buddy Reads: Have fun — and maybe tackle a big book you’ve been avoiding — with a reading buddy. Team up with a local friend, one who lives far away, or someone you connected with online. Choose a book and chat about it as you to read together.
  • Organize a Virtual Book Discussion with Friends from Afar: Distance is no barrier thanks to technology! Set up virtual meetings with friends worldwide for book clubs or literary chats.

BYOB (Bring Your Own Book!) Lit Chats are a great way to stay connected with other book lovers. Organize your own with friends, or join the virtual chats I host each month! Invitations are sent to members of my private Prose & Pastime Facebook Group. If you don’t want to risk the FB algorithm, get the invites emailed to you. Hope to see you there!

  • Literary Craft Session: Hand letter a favorite quote, make bookmarks or tote bags, or even custom book covers that reflect your favorite novels. There are so many ways to express your book love (this website highlights just a few)!
  • Create your own Little Free Library: Little Free Libraries are a wonderful way to share your love of reading with your neighbors. Bonus: they also give you a chance to make room for the new books your neighbors will share with you!
  • Grow Your Bookstagram: Okay, this one’s for all my social media enthusiasts out there! Share your beautiful book photos and reviews with world, meet other book lovers, and get even more recommendations for your TBR (and connect with me on Instagram — I want to see what you’re up to!)

Make Your Book Clubs More Engaging This Summer

Summer reading isn’t just about going it solo; it’s also an excellent opportunity for experiences with friends — you guessed it, book clubs!

Book clubs are fantastic year-round but especially during summertime. If you’re part of a book club—or want to start one — add a little summer fun with a book related activity. And if you want even more ideas, check out my done-for-you book club kits!

  • BYOB Lit Chats:  I mentioned these earlier, but they’re also a great way for your book club to enjoy a more relaxed summer schedule, without the commitment of reading a specific book. Bring your own book (and beverage!) to a park or someone’s backyard. Share your latest read, swap stories, and sip on some refreshing drinks. Perfect way to chill and chat!
  • Host a Themed Book Club Party:
    • Themed Potluck: Pick dishes inspired by your current read.
    • Outdoor Meetings: Take advantage of warm weather and meet in parks, gardens, or even the beach — whatever outdoor venue matches your chosen book best!
    • Creative Discussions: Use props from your book or dress up as your favorite character. Trust me, it’s hilarious to see your friends as Victorian nobles or 1920s flappers!
  • Fun Icebreakers and Games to Kick Off Meetings: Start meetings with fun icebreakers related to characters or plot points from your chosen book like, like Two Truths and a Lie or literary Bingo.
  • Incorporate Multimedia Elements (Think Podcasts, Playlists, and More): Enhance discussions with multimedia elements like author interviews on podcasts or themed playlists that capture the essence of your read.

Quick Tips for Selecting the Perfect Summer Read for Your Group

It’s hard enough choosing books you think you will enjoy, even harder pleasing a crowd! Try these ideas to select your book club’s summer reads:

  • Choose books that evoke strong imagery or emotions tied to summertime vibes — think beach settings, road trips, or transformative adventures.
  • Consider choosing lighter reads or page-turners that fit well with sunny days and vacation vibes. Poll your members for suggestions – everyone loves having a say!
  • Alternate between new and older releases — everyone will enjoy the variety, plus the added bonus of shorter library waits.
