Have you ever felt like a book was calling you to visit its setting? Why not answer that call by exploring a nearby location that mirrors the backdrop of your current read? If you’re engrossed in a novel set in a vibrant city or quaint countryside, find somewhere local that resembles it. Spend a few hours exploring the area, and remember, it doesn’t have to be an exact match; just enough to make you feel you’re stepping into the story.
For instance, did Miss Morgan’s Book Brigade make you want to live in the New York City Public Library? Visit the most famous or most beautiful library in your region and revel in its loveliness and tranquility.
Or if you’re reading The Night Circus and live near an amusement park or fairground, spend the day soaking up the whimsical atmosphere and carnival lights.
Keep it simple and get outside, no matter the season. If your book is set in a particular season, plan an easy outdoor meeting. A picnic in the spring or summer. An autumn walk or trip to a pumpkin patch in the fall. A winter hike or holiday light walk.
Visit Historic Bookstores
A bookstore is a special haven, a place for losing track of time — and losing yourself! If you’re inspired by books like The Last Bookshop In London or The Christmas Bookshop, seek out the oldest bookstore in your area and spend a few hours browsing. Chat with the owner if you can (and try to buy at least one book)!
Recreate A Tasty Scene
Perhaps you were riveted by Code Name Hélène and want to try mixing up a French 75 cocktail — a perfect way to pay homage while sipping sophistication! Break out the coupes and have fun mastering this classic concoction.
Alternatively, if culinary delights are more up your alley (and, really, who can resist?), follow my book club’s lead when we celebrated Julia Child’s My Life In France. We threw a dinner party and feasted on delicious recipes from her cookbook. The results were both deliciously satisfying and slightly chaotic (in true Julia style!).

Books often leave us longing for experiences beyond our everyday lives, and this makes a perfect excuse for a literary field trip.
