Heartbroken, encouraged, angry, accepting… I was stunned by my reaction to this book. McConaghy managed to touch every corner of my emotional reservoir with her poignant prose. Loss and love, heartache and laughter, tragedy and new beginnings – it’s all here.

Wild Dark Shore is a mystery wrapped in a taut thriller with a love story at its core, and not a story you will soon forget!

My Honest Thoughts on Wild Dark Shore

On a remote island at the edge of the world, Dominic Salt and his children guard Shearwater, the last refuge of the planet’s greatest seed bank. Once a bustling research hub, the island is now theirs alone, until a violent storm washes a stranger onto their shore.

Rowan, guarded and secretive, seems like she might be the salvation the family craves. But Dominic knows she is hiding something. And Shearwater is steeped in secrets of its own – sabotaged radios, a hidden grave, a furtiveness between Dominic and his children that hints at something much darker than anyone is willing to reveal. As storms close in, Rowan and the Salts must decide whether they can trust each other long enough to protect both the seeds and perhaps, a fragile chance at a future.

Charlotte McConaghy is a master of foreshadowing. With short, sharp chapters, she keeps the momentum going and the tension rising. Every page had me whispering, “I have to know what’s next.” I was stunned by the revelations and turns of the story until the very last page.

While the seedbank and its mission give the novel an almost apocalyptic edge, hinting at humanity’s desperate attempt to outlast climate catastrophe, that’s not what the story is about. It merely serves as the vehicle to deliver the emotional punches – over and over again! – and as the backdrop for an intimate exploration of survival, grief, connection, and the impossible choices people make when the world may be slipping away.

My Recommendation:

Don’t let the hints of science and end-of-the-world themes scare you off – this isn’t really a book about climate change. It’s a book about people, about love, about loss, about survival. It’s a story for the heart. McConaghy’s prose sweeps you into an emotional storm as fierce and beautiful as the waves crashing over Shearwater.

Take Note: Points to Consider Before Reading Wild Dark Shore.

Some readers know the type of books they always like, and more importantly, exactly the type of books they don’t enjoy. If you are that reader, these tidbits will be helpful.

  • Possible triggers: Most novels have a few topics a reader may wish to avoid, and this book is no exception. The possible triggers I noted were suicide, murder, mental illness, isolation, relations with a minor, and death of a parent/spouse.
  • Stylistic choices: This book is written in very short chapters from multiple points of view, and often the action or reflection jumps from one time and place to another. Don’t worry, it may seem confusing for a moment but it always becomes clear quickly. Some readers, however, have noted that this style made it more difficult to get to know and connect with the characters.
  • Spicy Rating: 💋💋 There are two or three “open-door” scenes in Wild Dark Shore. They are relatively short and easy enough to skim over if you choose.

If You Enjoyed These Books, Wild Dark Shore Might Be Your Next Read

Recommendations for “similar reads” can be tricky because different readers like different books for different reasons. However, you may appreciate Wild Dark Shore if you enjoyed:

  • These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant – For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that’s exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he’s got a lot to hide.
  • What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown – A teenage girl breaks free from her father’s world of isolation in this exhilarating novel of family, identity, and the power we have to shape our own destinies.
  • God of the Woods by Liz Moore – When a teenager vanishes from her Adirondack summer camp, two worlds collide.
  • Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall – A sweeping love story with the pace and twists of a thriller, Broken Country unearths dangerous, deadly secrets from the past in this emotional tale.
  • Heartwood by Amity Gaige – A search and rescue team race against time when an experienced hiker mysteriously disappears on the Appalachian Trail in Maine.
  • Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens – Kya Clark is barefoot and wild. Unfit for polite society, she’s rumored to be the “Marsh Girl” who haunts Barkley Cove. So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her.

Wild Dark Shore: The Story’s (Back) Story

Did you know there are thousands of seed banks around the world aimed at preserving biodiversity and preventing a global famine as the impacts of the climate crisis increase? Known as the “doomsday vault,” the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway (sometimes called the “Noah’s Ark of seeds”) is an attempt to store seeds from every country on earth. The Shearwater seed vault was loosely based on this real vault, which, like the fictional Shearwater vault, was flooded due to melting permafrost.

Shearwater Island does not actually exist, but its inspiration does. Macquarie Island is a World Heritage site halfway between Tasmania and Antarctica. Over four million seals, penguins, and seabirds call this thirty-four-kilometer-long island home! Charlotte McConaghy visited this island with her partner and sixteen-month-old son, and it is that experience that she so deftly portrays in the story of Shearwater.
