How to Create a Personal Summer Reading Plan (That’s Actually Fun)

Share the book love!

Are you looking for a flexible summer reading plan that fits your life? Create your personal reading roadmap this summer (or whatever season you are in!), and say goodbye to rigid TBR lists and hello to a reading life that is all about curiosity, mood, and freedom.

There’s something about summer that invites us to think differently about our reading life. Maybe it’s the longer evenings. Or the road trips. Or the beach-bag-stuffed-with-paperbacks daydreams. Whether you’re curled up on the couch or taking a book to the pool, summer gives us a chance to pause and reimagine how we read.

I’m the reader who likes a flexible plan: I have certain books I want to read, while leaving room for exploring. Instead of building a strict TBR list or challenge this year, I’m creating something that’s guided more by mood than obligation. Let’s call it A Personal Summer Reading Roadmap.

This isn’t your typical reading list. It’s a relaxed reading guide that lets you map your way through whatever season you are in, leaving space for detours, surprises, and discoveries.

What Is a Summer Reading Roadmap?

Think of it like a loose travel plan for your summer reading life.

You’re not assigning yourself a summer full of specific books or rigid deadlines. You’re mapping out the type of reading you want to do this summer and how you want that reading to feel.

The goal? A more intentional summer reading experience, with space for a few fun detours along the way.

Step 1: Set a Reading Theme (or Two)

Don’t read too much into this step. Your “theme” isn’t about a particular type of book; it’s about the experience you are seeking. Before you build your summer reading list, ask yourself this:  How do I want my reading life to feel this summer?

  • What do I need from my reading life right now?
  • How do I want to feel when I close a book this summer?
Creative summer reading themes might include:
  • Comfort + nostalgia
  • Fun + feel good + easy reading
  • Adventure + armchair travel
  • Big feelings + bold stories
  • Quiet reflection
  • Nature + seasons
  • Books about books
  • Learning + growth
  • Wild card summer (pick by impulse only!)

Pick one or mix a few – it’s your map!

Step 2: Choose Your “Destinations”

Now it’s time to outline the “stops” on your summer reading roadmap. Think of these as categories, experiences, or stories you want to explore. It could be one, it could be ten — it’s all about your summer reading mood. You don’t have to select specific titles, just think about which direction you want to go.

This gives you a flexible summer reading plan without locking you into a strict list.

Possible Stops Along Your Summer Reading Route:
  • A book set somewhere you want to visit
  • A reread of a comfortable favorite
  • A book that challenges you
  • A memoir or biography
  • A spontaneous pick from the library or bookstore
  • A book you can read with a friend or your book club
  • A book to match a summer mood: rainy afternoon, poolside, travel day, quiet night
  • A debut novel
  • A book that scares you a little (in a good way!)

You can use these categories (or pick your own!) to build a loose “route,” or just check them off as you go.

Reading does more than make you feel, it also inspires your curiosity. Remember to leave room for exploration along your route (literary field trip, anyone?).

Step 3: Leave Room for Pit Stops + Detours In Your Summer Reading Plan

The best part of a road trip? The unplanned stops along the way. The same goes for your reading life.

Make space in your summer reading plan for a book that:

  • Feels like the right book at the right time
  • Comes from a friend’s recommendation
  • You stumble across on a display, podcast, or conversation
  • Has a cover you can’t resist, or a premise that calls to you

Sometimes, the book that changes your summer isn’t the one you planned to read!

Add the FUN to your reading life!

Take your book club meetings up a notch…the EASY way! You’ll host a fabulous meeting with all of the fun and none of the stress. Check out the Done-for-You Book Club Kits and other bookish resources in The Shop.

All book club kits are pay-what-you-want (including free!), because money should never be a barrier to a fun reading life.

Step 4: Track Your Summer Reading Journey (Optional!)

You don’t have to track anything, but if you want to reflect or remember your summer reading adventures, try:

  • A simple one-line journal for each finished book (check out the super simple method that has really been working for me this year!)
  • Notes about where you were when you read it
  • How it made you feel
  • A running list of surprises or discoveries (did the book teach you something or inspire you to try something new?)

You could also create a visual map or use a printable (like the one I’ve made below 👇) to fill in along the way.
